New Year's Eve manicure: OPI - The Spy Who Loved Me with essence - make it golden

Hey guys!

Without much talk about the old and new year I'm just gonna show you what I'll be wearing tonight. I had intended to put on China Glaze's Liquid Crystal, but boy did that plan ever get detoured. I wanted to swatch The Spy Who Loved Me and of course the sun disappeared on my slow ass. So I just decided to keep it on for the next day and got increasingly mesmerized by it; long story short, I love it and didn't wanna take it off, so I simply didn't. Of course I had to add a little something to make it more festive. I realized this is more appropriate for Christmas than New Year's, but whatever. I didn't think of this for Christmas ("Damn you, hindsight!") so I'm wearing it now.

Two coats of The Spy Who Loved Me, a gorgeous red that loses all the gold shimmer on the nail, which is a pity. I dabbed make it golden on with pieces of a paper towel - the sponging never worked for me, all the sponges I tried took off more than they put on. I think they might have been too dense, but I tried quite a few and after a while I didn't know where to look for less dense sponges anymore. ANYWAY. Finished everything off with a matt top coat. I love mattefied glitters, it just gives them a very special look I feel.

Elena (great blog, check it out) gave me the idea for both using Liquid Crystal for New Year's (sorry that didn't get put into action) and working with paper towel pieces to make gradients. The latter technique worked perfectly for me, which I'm really happy about.

Let me know what you're wearing tonight :)

[Swatch & Review] misslyn - lighthearted

Hey guys!

It's been some time since we've looked at a misslyn polish together, hasn't it? When I picked this up yesterday I noticed that brand changes its range a lot. They didn't have "heart of gold" and "heat wave" anymore... Anyway, here's my latest pick.

Two coats with top coat, easy to apply. After putting this on I once again noticed how pale reds make me look. It's weird; sometimes it doesn't seem so bad, other times I think it's far too strong of an effect. This particular color reminds me of candy - red-colored bonbons or candy canes. I think that might be because of the pink tones, but don't quote me on it...

I can't think of a question to ask you guys today. Weird. Well. Do you usually listen to music while you write your blog posts? Because (and you probably know that) I do :)

Kiko - Steel Grey (Lavish Oriental Limited Edition Holographic Nail Lacquer)

Hey guys!
Last week I got the chance to visit the Kiko store "near" here and snatched three of the Lavish Oriental holos - unfortunately, they didn't have the turquoise one anymore, but that's okay. Everything in store was 30% off, so that was awesome. Everyone has already blogged the living daylights out of these polishes, but I just had to!

It's opaque in two coats and didn't give me a very hard time during application. Just be careful not to push it around too much. Unfortunately, it chipped the next day already. But most polishes do on my nails, so that's no surprise really. Definitely needs top coat to bring out the full sparkle goodness.

What's you favorite holo?

I have a question to ask you...

Hey guys!

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with lots of good company and food :) I'm typing this on December 23rd, so I can't tell you about my own experience (yet?). Anyway, let's get to the point of this entry.

For a while now I've been thinking about how to do my blogiversary giveaway that will take place at the end of January. I will not tell you the specifics yet - of course not! But I need to ask you something that I can't figure out on my own.

I know my blog is almost all nail polish. It's not that I don't want to post about anything else, more that I can't. You see, I do own some make-up, but I can't really use it. My eyes have become hyper-sensitive at some point and I can't put on any kind of make-up without them reacting very strongly. I've tried a few things and none of them worked. I can't even use face powder because what little fallout I get there already irritates my eyes.

Now the question is - my blog is hardly a make-up blog, but would you like make-up to be part of the giveaway? I know that a lot of you guys aren't into nail polish only. Please please please let me know what you think since I'm drawing kind of a blank here.

TL;DR: I can't use make-up but that doesn't mean I don't want to cater to your make-up addiction - should I include make-up in my blogiversary giveaway or should it be strictly nail polish only? Give me your input, guys!

Christmas manicure: essie - Beyond Cozy with butter London - Henley Regatta

Hey guys!

When I bought Beyond Cozy I knew I'd be wearing it for Christmas. It just seems perfect for the occasion to me. And I couldn't resist trying out Henley Regatta as an accent!

I hope you all have wonderful holidays - merry Christmas!

Clinique "whole lotta colour" set

Hey guys!

Almost immediately after being disappointed by Nordstrom, I saw someone post about the set being available from Douglas (pronounced approximately like this, by the way: dew-glass). OF COURSE I had to get it to add to my little collection!

The set contains 5 mini-size Chubby Stick lip balms and cost me EUR 29.95 (~ USD 39.65). That's approximately EUR 6 per 1.2 g/0.04 oz of product. The full size Chubby Sticks contain 3 g and cost around EUR 19.90 (sometimes a little less, depending on where you shop).

As for the colors: super strawberry and oversized orange contain sparkle, the others don't. I'm not sure how oversized orange and richer raisin will look on me, but since the color payoff from these isn't huge, it might work. Tell me if you want to see swatches of any of these - or all of them.

So far I have only seen one of the colors available as mini size outside of special deals or sets, and it also cost EUR 6, so yeah. Not exactly a special value you're getting here, but that's fine by me - it's more than 1/3 of the original product quantity for less than 1/3 of the full-size prize. Not too bad.

[Haul] My very first Orly nail polishes

Hey guys!

So I finally cracked and ordered some Orly nail polishes... they had a nice offer on the Flash Glam FX collection - 10% off. Plus a free gift with any purchase with the code FACEBOOK X-Mas, worth 25 euros. Pretty cool, right? My little parcel arrived here today and of course I couldn't wait to share with you!

Flash Glam FX collection

Top just with natural light, bottom with flash. I had also ordered Monster Mash, but they forgot to put it in the parcel. That one of all the polishes I ordered! Anyway. Can't wait to play around with these, they are so cool.

Naughty or Nice collection

Top just with natural light, bottom with flash. I have no idea what angels' eyes look like but I think Orly might be quite dead-on. And Devil May Care is just total awesomeness in a bottle.

the gift

Isn't it amazing how much effort they put into this?

I couldn't wait to try these two out, so I did mainly Angel Eyes with Devil May Care as accent on my left hand and the same, but the other way round, on my right hand. It looks very christmassy, althought that wasn't my intention. This is without top coat still, that's why it looks gritty. I really like this shot, although the light is so off. Well, lamplight... can't do much about the permanent darkness that is this season. BUT! From today, the days are getting longer again. I can't wait.

Do you own Orly polishes and which ones are your favorites?

Jelly sandwich with Zoya - Frida, NYX - Under The Moon and NYX - Enchanted Forest

Hey guys!

I was playing with jellies again, as you can see. I really like experimenting with them, it gives interesting effects. Not everything works, but I quite like what I came up with here, so let's see those trapped glitters!

with Under The Moon

with Enchanted Forest

I really like how the blue-tinted glitter gives the green base a more teal look. If you ask me, that's pretty awesome. As usual, build up the base with as many coats as you see fit, then apply glitter until you're satisfied with how much is on the nail and finish off with one last layer of the jelly. I had to dab a bit with both glitters, but it was fairly easy to get to the amount of glitter I wanted.

And now I'm gonna go out with only four painted nails because I neither have time to remove what I have on nor to paint the rest of my nails. Ahem, see you guys!

[Swatch & Review] ANNY Glitter Party in Hollywood nail polishes timeless love and follow me

Hey guys!

ANNY, a brand that gained fame this year especially for their much-coveted polish "The Answer Is Love", recently came out with a small collection of glitter polishes in mini size called "Glitter Party in Hollywood". I found two that I liked, so here they are!

timeless love

Pointer and ring finger: ANNY timeless love over two coats of L'Oréal Midnight Mistress, with top coat; middle and pinky finger: Two coats of ANNY timeless love by itself, with top coat. I used two coats of top coat for a smooth surface. I definitely prefer this over the dark blue. By itself the depth kind of gets lost because the small glitter is not as visible as against the darker canvas. Definitely gonna wear this on New Year's Eve, I really love this combination.

follow me

Pointer and ring finger: Two coats of essence Have You Seen My Unicorn?, two coats of ANNY follow me, with top coat; middle and pinky finger: Two coats of ANNY follow me by itself, with top coat. I used two coats of top coat for a smooth surface. The base color doesn't make much of a difference here, but it might come out better if the base color polish you use were darker. I'm thinking a dark pink or maybe a deep red. I need to experiment with this.

What do you think of these?

[Swatch & Review] essence trend edition Fantasia nail polishes

Hey guys!

For a while now this trend edition has been out... I feel it's a little "off-topic" for this season, but then again, why not. Let's have a look at these colors!

Elves Like Lilac

Two coats with top coat. Can you see the blue shimmer? I really like this, but I might have liked it even better if the purple base were a little darker.

Queen Of My Cloud Castle

Two coats with top coat. I couldn't get this on very evenly. Top coat smoothed it out a bit better. Absolutely not my color in my opinion. It has silvery-pink shimmer.

Take A Ride On Pegasus

Two coats on its own on middle and pinky finger, one coat over black on pointer and ring finger, all with top coat. The second picture is with flash to show the shimmer better. This seems like a very unusual color to me. I prefer it over black. I might try to layer it over a dark red at some point to see how that comes out.

Have You Seen My Unicorn?

Two coats with top coat. I really like the name on this one, as opposed to the other three that just don't quite appeal to me. This is a very nice champagne shade with a hint of rose. I really like this, it seems classy. Easily my favorite in the bunch, though probably the most unoriginal. This is taken under direct lamplight because it was already too dark for natural light pictures. But the color isn't far off at all. Imagine it a bit more rosy.

I feel like the colors in this trend edition - apart from Have You Seen My Unicorn?, but that one got the best name - are quite unusual. What do you think?

[Haul] L'Occitane en Provence hand creams

Hey guys!

Sorry for not posting as regularly anymore, I've run out of scheduled posts and hardly ever get the chance to take any decent photos what with all the darkness these days. Enough of the whining, though. I received my order from L'Occitane en Provence today and thought I'd quickly share with you ^_^

Hand cream trio, from left to right: Fleurs Merveilleuses/marvelous flowers, Crème Mains Peaux Sèches/Dry Skin Hand Cream, Feuilles Magiques/magical leaves

Do. You. See. That. Packaging? Isn't it so pretty and cute? The colors got a little distorted by my lamp, this is actually very bright and mostly pink. I love it.

Fleurs de Cerisier/Cherry Blossom. Again with the packaging... Very nice and classy this time I feel. A little big for that tiny tube, but well.

Speaking of tiny, all of these are 30 ml/1 oz. They smell quite floral and I couldn't pick up great differences in scent between them, but I like what I do smell.

I immediately had to try one and went for the Dry Skin one. I was afraid to pop the tube open at the top because I pressed and pressed and nothing came out. I scraped the top bit of the cream off with my nail and could then finally get something on my hand.

The cream is really thick, quite solid in a way, too. That may have to be attributed to the fact that these were out in the cold for a while, though. So I hope it'll be easier to handle these once they've warmed up. Another thing worth noting: I thought the tubes were made of metal, but they seem to actually be either pure plastic or a weird mixture of metal and plastic; I can't really tell. If you dent the tube, it holds the dent, but it doesn't feel like "real" metal. It's weird, but whatever.

I bought the set for EUR 21.- (~ USD 27.-) and the single one for EUR 7.- (~ USD 9.-). Not that I would have needed more hand creams *COUGH*. I have at least a million waiting to be used, but I do use a lot more hand cream than I used to since I started my blog, so yeah. Also, since my hands get very very dry during winter, I feel I will use them up at some point. Of course I will have a million new ones by then, but WELL.

Which hand creams do you like most? What do I absolutely need to check out?

[Swatch & Review] butter London Sparkle, Sparkle Holiday Lacquer Collection

Hey guys!

Here I bring you my first ever butter London polishes! This holiday set was recently a special offer on Amazon for just under EUR 20, so I took the chance and ordered it! Let's see the colors, shall we?

The Black Knight

This is two coats - top picture without, bottom picture with top coat. I recommend at least two coats of top coat to make this halfway even on the surface. I don't really mind slightly gritty surfaces, though. I think this might be better over black. I wish the glitter would pop more, I feel it gets a bit lost.

Rosie Lee

On the ring finger, you see two coats by itself with top coat and on middle and pinky finger you can see it over Lacura Beauty "Cosmopolitan", which is a dark-ish red, also with top coat. I think Rosie Lee is best used layered, though it does get to a fairly reasonable opacity by itself.

Fairy Cake

This is one coat over black. As opposed to Rosie Lee, I feel Fairy Cake should only be used layered - I don't think this can be opaque on its own. It looks very dense over black, but I tried one coat on the bare nail when I first got the kit and it looked really patchy. I guess I didn't have enough polish on the brush, but still, I wouldn't use this on its own. I really love the name, it just seems to be so perfectly befitting and cute with all the rainbow sparkle holographic goodness.

What do you think of these? Do you own any butter London polishes? Which ones?

[Swatch & Review] Nubar - Black Polka Dot

Hey guys!

So I didn't only get White Polka Dot a while ago but also its "brother" if you will - who is almost literally the black sheep in the family. You'll see what I mean in a minute, so here we go!

Swatched on white for best contrast. One coat, two coats, three coats. As you can see the result is so-so at best and disappointing at worst. There aren't nearly enough big glitter pieces in this polish. I like the look of the small glitter alone on white as well, but that's neither what I expected nor what I paid for. I tried fishing for the big pieces, but it wouldn't work. At three coats I just gave up because the polish on my nails was thicker than my nails themselves.

What do you think of Black Polka Dot? Is there a special technique to make it work?

[Swatch & Review] essie Limited Edition collection stylenomics nail polishes head mistress and recessionista

Hey guys!

Here are my two picks from essie's fall collection - once again, fairly unusual choices for me. I have to admit that I bought recessionista more for the name than the color, though. I just think it's such a cool play on words, don't you?

head mistress

Two coats with top coat. I. Love. This. Red. It's unbelievable, this is so awesome! I think I have found my favorite red. I wore it for three days although it already chipped on the second... but that's due to my nails, not the polish. All polishes get defeated by my super soft, easily bending nails after two days at maximum.

recessionista

Two coats with top coat. Not my color in my opinion, but more wearable than some other plum shades I have. As I said, I think the name is just so cool.

Did you get something from this collection and if so, which of the shades charmed you?

[Haul] Souvenirs from the U. S.

Hey guys!

My parents recently went to the States and of course that was the most perfect opportunity for me to get a few things that either don't exist here or are much more expensive. My mom was nice enough to spend quite a bit for me, so let's see the awesomeness... By the way, can I still call this a haul even though I didn't spend a penny on any of these things?! (Thanks again, mom... although you'll never read this.)

Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters

from left to right: Sweet Tart, Lollipop, Raspberry Pie, Pink Truffle, Fig Jam
I'm such a sucker for that packaging...

Fig Jam, Pink Truffle

Raspberry Pie, Lollipop, Sweet Tart

I have to admit the two brown-ish tones don't look too great on me. My mom picked them because one of the four Lip Butter colors I had noted wasn't available. I have to add that I didn't ask for everything on the list, of course. That would have been a whole lot of money... Just so you don't think I'm a greedy b**ch. Anyway. I feel I can kind of make the browns work if I apply them REALLY lightly. Another thing worth noting is that especially Lollipop has quite big glittery bits in it. I would have preferred these to be smaller, but well.

OF COURSE I also put quite a bit of nail polish on my list. Most of the brands seemingly weren't available at the store my parents went to, but I really can't complain.

OPI nail polishes

Every Month Is Oktoberfest, Suzi And The 7 Düsseldorfs, German-icure by OPI,
Black Shatter,
The Spy Who Loved Me, Glitzerland, Yodel Me On My Cell

Again, my mom just picked a few polishes that I hadn't noted because some of the ones I had put on the list were not available. In fact, only three of the above were on my list, but I'm happy about all of them; except for the black shatter maybe, since I already have one of those from another brand. But I tried it out already and it works really nicely, so I'm not exactly disappointed, either.

Fun fact: When I told my mom that OPI was EUR 16.- per bottle (approximately USD 21.-) here, compared to around USD 8.- in the States, she said "If I had known that I would have bought more!", haha!

So who's jelly jelly? Anything in here that you would've picked as well?

Jelly sandwich with Zoya - Paloma and NYX - Super Funk

Hey guys!

So here's me playing around with jellies again! This time we have a "real" jelly sandwich.

I started out with Paloma, just trying to make it as even as possible as base color, then added Super Funk and finished off with one more coat of Paloma. I can't really tell you how many coats I used apart from the last one since it really depends on how intense you want the base color to be and how much glitter you want on your nails. It took some time to get enough on for my liking since the glitter in Super Funk is dispersed kind of sparsely. Anyway, I think the look of the glitter trapped between the jelly is so cool!

What do you think of this combo? Too much? What would you pair Paloma with?
